AT&T Announces Mega Merger with Direct TV

AT&T Announces Mega Merger with Direct TV
Posted May 19th, 2014 @ 10:47am

Another mega-merger is shaking up the telecom industry.

AT&T and DirecTV announced a nearly $50-billion merger that will create a powerhouse to rival the largest cable companies.  Under the deal, AT&T will gain DirecTV's 20 million subscribers.

The combined company will be able to offer phone service, high-speed internet and paid television subscriptions.  The massive merger is sure to create new concerns over competition and number of options available to consumers.

The NFL is in a huge position of power in the merger. If DirectTV does not get NFL Sunday Ticket after this coming season, AT&T can back away with an out clause in the deal's fine print.  During a conference call Monday on the merger, DirecTV CEO Mike White said he was confident the NFL will stay on board as the deal isn't expected to be done for at least a year.
