(New York, NY)  --  Google and Microsoft will install "kill switches" on their new smartphone operating systems.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says the Secure Our Smartphones Coalition wants to make stolen smartphones inoperable.  He and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon launched the group a year ago.

They also reported statistics that show that since Apple installed the switches, iPhone thefts have plummeted, while the theft of other devices have skyrocketed.
