(Mountain View, CA) -- Google is surprising many with the release of its newest smartphone today.

The Moto G wasn't expected to be available in the U.S. until January, but "CNET" says the early launch comes because of a strong demand overseas and the ability to quickly speed up the manufacturing process.

The Moto G is different than most smartphones because it comes with no contract, no SIM lock and it allows users to change how the device looks with different colors and accents.

At $179 dollars, the Moto G is the low-cost alternative to its big brother, the Moto X .
