(Mountain View, CA)  --  Google says after thousands of hours on the highways, it will now work to make its self-driving cars safer in cities.

Engineers for the tech giant say the cars' software already recognizes situations like pedestrian traffic, buses, stop signs held by crossing guards and hand signals made by cyclists.

The company says it has logged more than 700,000 miles with the cars since self-driving vehicles became street legal in Nevada in 2011, with only one reported accident.  Google says it hopes to get the "autonomous driving'" technology to the public by 2017.
