When it comes to cleaning the house, our bedrooms often get neglected. We tidy up and clear the clutter from the spaces we hang out in all the time, like the kitchen and family room, and sometimes end up shoving the excess items we picked up into our bedrooms. And that can make it feel overwhelming when we finally get around to working on the bedroom.
So, where do we start in there? According to Tina Horan and Nancy Yerkes, two professional organizers who cofounded the organizing service Uncluttered Spaces, these things don’t belong in our bedrooms.
- Exercise equipment - Home workouts are popular, but having the equipment in your bedroom creates more clutter and can make you feel less relaxed. Instead, move it to a space designated for exercising so your bedroom feels more spacious.
- Mismatched socks - It might seem like a small thing, but that graveyard of socks without a mate takes up a lot of valuable drawer space. The pros say it’s time to let the misfit socks go and reclaim that space.
- Old clothes - If your closet is full of clothing that doesn’t fit you anymore or you don’t wear, it’s just clutter at this point. Keep what you’ll realistically wear and get rid of the rest.
- Bills, mail and other papers - Piles of mail and documents can make your bedroom even more cluttered. Looking at those stacks can cause stress, so the experts recommend designating a drawer or basket for mail so it’s nice and tidy.
- Mismatched hangers - These are a no-no because they can make your closet look messy. Having a set of sturdy matching hangers creates a more visually satisfying closet.
- Dishes - Everyone snacks in their bedroom from time-to-time, but don’t let those dirty plates and cups stack up in there, get them back to the kitchen ASAP.
- Extra bedding - The pros say all you need are two sets of bedding, more than that takes up too much space.
- Empty boxes and storage containers - Instead of cluttering up the bedroom with them, put them in a storage closet, crawl space or basement.
