Majority Of Americans Are Now Taking Better Care Of Their Cars

These days, a lot of people are trying to save money anywhere they can and for some, that means making things they own last as long as possible. Cars are one of the most expensive things we buy and to avoid spending even more on repairs, it seems people are paying more attention to their current vehicle’s maintenance.

A new survey of 2-thousand car owners finds that 73% of Americans have made a conscious decision to take better care of their car because of rising vehicle costs.

  • It’s even more true for older folks, as 75% of Gen X says they’re making an active effort to maintain their current car, compared to 60% of Gen Z.
  • More than a quarter (28%) of all car owners are thinking about the cost of a new vehicle, as well as past maintenance mistakes when deciding what products to use for their cars.
  • Respondents are much more likely to buy a brand name product (57%) for their vehicle than a private-label product (34%).
  • When it comes to how the maintenance is done on their vehicles, only a small percentage of Americans are DIY types, with just 20% doing their own maintenance.
  • The other 80% prefer to let someone else do their car’s maintenance for them, with half leaving it to professionals they hire and 27% relying on a friend or family member to do it for them.
  • More than half (58%) of those who take their car to the shop instead of DIY-ing it say they just don’t have the knowledge needed to maintain the car themselves.
