During spooky season, crowds of people line up to get their fright on at a haunted house, but it seems a lot of them don’t have to leave home to be scared. A new survey reveals that 60% of homeowners think their house might be haunted because of things they’ve seen and heard at home.
According to the poll of 1,000 homeowners across the country by Angi, the site formerly known as Angie’s List:
- Nearly two-thirds (65%) have experienced “unexplained phenomena” in their homes, like flickering lights and unusual sounds.
- Over three-quarters (77%) report hearing spooky sounds in their home, including unsettling noises in the walls (31%), creaky floors (30%) and flickering lights (26%).
- Even creepier? Hearing unexplained footsteps, which half of homeowners have heard and consider the spookiest sound you can hear at home.
- Hearing a toilet flush when no one’s around comes in second, something 13% have experienced.
- Close to 20% of those surveyed admit they’re afraid of specific areas in their homes, especially basements and attics.
- And 60% of homeowners say they prefer not to be home alone … at their own house!
- But it turns out, a lot of people wouldn’t be scared off by these eerie occurrences, as 58% of respondents say they’d consider buying a house that could be haunted.
