Study: Married Dads Spend 30 Hours A Week On Housework

After the day devoted to honoring the dads in our lives, new research is giving us more reasons to celebrate them. It finds American dads have definitely been stepping up around the house, spending more time doing household chores and taking care of their kids.

The Institute of Family Studies collected data going back decades to see how the numbers compare to today. According to their new study, married fathers across the country now spend about 30 hours a week on domestic duties.

  • That’s a huge 200% jump from the 10 hours a week dads devoted to kids and housework back in 1965.
  • Back then, moms averaged over 50 hours a week tending to their children and chores.
  • The numbers on mothers go all the way back to 1930, when moms spent about 55 hours a week on domestic work.
  • The study reports that in 1965, the average married couple with small kids would have spent about 50 hours a week taking care of the little ones and the home.
  • Parents now spend even more time, about 70 hours a week, doing the same tasks, but the workload is more evenly distributed these days.
  • Today’s dads aren’t just helping out more at home, they’re spending more time with their kids than any other generation of fathers.
