How To Turn Off New Instagram Feature That Tells People You're Online

Instagram rolled out a new feature on Thursday that allows yours friends to see when you're using the app. When you're active on the app a green dot next to your profile picture will appear in various spaces, including the Direct inbox and the friend list when you share a post from feed. The new feature was announced in a blog post that claims Instagram is "making it easier to connect with friends...by showing you when they’re available to chat." That's a nice idea, however, just because you'e scrolling through your Instagram feed doesn't necessarily mean you're down for DM conversation. Don't worry, though, because you can turn Instagram's latest feature off. Here's how.

In order to disable all the green dots, click the Settings button on your profile.

Scroll down to the Privacy and Security section, and go into the Activity Status menu.

There will be a single toggle option for "Show Activity Status." If you don't want your friends to know when you're online, make sure the toggle is switched off. This will remove both the green dot and any indication of when you were on Instagram last.

Your inbox will now look like it did before the update. The green dots will be gone and you'll be able to go back to your Instagram lurking in peace.
