APD arrests suspect in 2008 attack

FROM KOB-TV After nearly a decade, police have made an arrest for the 2008 attack on a Cibola High School student.

Authorities said late Wednesday night they apprehended Justin Hansen, 33, for the Sept. 11, 2008 attack on then-teenager Brittani Marcell. Police charged Hansen with attempted murder, kidnapping and aggravated battery, among other charges.

Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Simon Drobik said a DNA match proved to be the break in the case.

Years later, Marcell began remembering details about the attack and APD released a sketch of the suspected attacker. KOB's Kai Porter interviewed Marcell's mother, Diane, in 2015.

"He beat her with a shovel very badly across her face, her head," she said at the time. "She had severe brain damage. She has been left with deafness in her left ear and blindness in her left eye now because of this person. He's a monster. And he needs to come forward and admit what he did was wrong."
