Ice cream is one of our favorite summertime treats and coffee is one of the best flavors around. But have you ever wondered how much caffeine is actually in it? Since we’re often sneaking in a few spoonfuls close to bedtime anyway, we should know if it could keep us from getting our precious sleep.
First, you should know that according to the USDA, a cup of coffee has 95 milligrams of caffeine. And here’s how much we’re getting in some of our favorite brands of ice cream:
- Haagen-Dazs Coffee Ice Cream: A half cup serving has 21.6 milligrams of caffeine. So that’s like drinking a few sips and it’s probably not enough to keep you awake.
- Ben & Jerry’s Coffee Buzz Buzz: This delightful flavor includes espresso bean fudge chunks in their coffee ice cream, so it’s got more caffeine. Each half-cup serving contains 45 milligrams of caffeine, which is about the same as half a cup of coffee. That might not be enough to keep you up, but then again, who eats just a half a cup of ice cream? Not us!
- Talenti Coffee Chocolate Chip: If you want all the flavor of coffee without too much caffeine, this is a good choice. A single serving only has about five milligrams of caffeine, which is about the same as a cup of decaf, which only has two milligrams.
