An Air Force Captain with top clearance who took off from Kirtland Air Base 35 years ago is now in custody in California.
Captain William Howard Hughes Jr., who was 33-years old and single when he vanished, is being held at Travis Air Force Base in the Bay Area after his arrest.
According to reports, Hughes told officials he has lived in California under the alias Barry O'Beirne since 1983 after he apparently became depressed and disillusioned with the Air Force. Hughes had top level security clearance for his work at Kirtland in the planning and analysis of NATO command surveillance systems.
An Office of Special Investigations spokeswoman reports that there's no indication Hughes was involved with the Soviet Union or that classified information was leaked.
