Sandia Mountain Coaster Moving Forward

posted by Tony Manero -

From KOB-TV: First there was the tram, then dining with incredible scenic views. Now, plans for a Sandia Mountain coaster are moving forward.

The owners of Sandia Peak Ski Company are asking the Forest Service for permission.

“It’ll be something fun and interesting for people to do outside,” Ben Abruzzo, General Manager for Sandia Peak Ski Area said.

The mountain coaster would be placed at the top of the Sandia Peak, with each ride lasting about three minutes. Two people would fit in each cart, and riders would be in control of how fast they move up and down the mountain.

“The neat thing is that it’s set low to the ground, so you weave in and out of the forest so you see nature. It'll give people opportunities to experience the mountain that otherwise wouldn't experience it,” Abruzzo said. You would have to ride the tram or ski lift to board the coaster.

"It'll be year round. There will be days obviously where it will be closed obviously if it is actively snowing, but the theory is you'll be able to do it summer and winter,” Abruzzo said.

Abruzzo expects the coaster to generate money and help the ski area weather the storm, and survive difficult winters, like last year.

Sandia Peak Ski Company will host an open house on the proposed mountain coaster Thursday. You'll be able to see displays and staff will be on hand to answer all your questions. That's from 4 to 7 p.m. at Double Eagle II Day Lodge at the base of Sandia Peak Ski Area.
