Teacher Fired for Refusing to Give Students 50% Credit for Failing to Do As

A teacher in Florida claims she lost her job this month because she refused to give students 50 percent credit for turning in 0 percent of their assigned work. Diane Tirado started working at a K-8 school in St. Lucie County last month. In mid-September, she learned about the school's "no zero" policy after she tried to hand out zeros to kids who didn't turn in a particular assignment. She says when she asked "What if they don't turn anything in?" she was told, "We give them a 50." She replied, "Oh, we don't. This is not kosher." Tirado's story went viral this week thanks to the message she left on a classroom whiteboard: "Bye kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50 for not handing anything in. Love, Mrs. Tirado." Meanwhile, the local superintendent claims, "You want to make sure that the grades themselves are not punitive in nature...We want to make it more difficult to fail than easier to succeed."
