Some Uber drivers are threatening to decline trips to the Balloon Fiesta because of a change to how they can access the park.
Alkarim Natha says, last year, drivers were able to bypass a lot of the traffic.
Paseo at Jefferson was designated for Park and Ride buses and Uber drivers. However, this year, Uber drivers are excluded from that route.
“I think we're providing a service for the passengers and the city,” said Uber driver Sandy Aronow. “We're making it easier so there's not a much traffic if everybody Ubers, so we're kind of alleviating that but on the other hand, if this doesn’t go through, a decent route for the Uber drivers there’s going to be pandemonium.”
The Balloon Fiesta’s media relations director, Tom Garrity, said they made the decision to exclude rideshare drivers from the Park and Ride route because it caused too many traffic issues for the general public last year.
“We learned a lot from 2017, so this year we're creating a new route for riding sharing opportunities and we have a special rideshare lot,” Garrity said.
Garrity said while this year's special routes will share traffic with the general public, there will be some unique lanes for rideshare drivers. However, he would not specify how to access those routes.
He says the Balloon Fiesta has been in contact with Uber and Lyft and they can communicate those routes to rideshare drivers.
