NM Man Refused Marriage License After Clerk Says NM Is A Foreign Country

A clerk in Washington, D.C., apparently needs to retake U.S. history after refusing to issue a marriage license to a man from New Mexico because she insisted New Mexico was a foreign country. The AP reports that the clerk's supervisor also believed New Mexico wasn't a part of America when Gavin Clarkson tried to use his New Mexico driver's license to apply for a marriage license last month at the District of Columbia Courts Marriage Bureau. “She thought New Mexico was a foreign country,” Clarkson told The Las Cruces Sun-News.  “All the couples behind us waiting in line were laughing.” Clarkson--who ran as a Republican to be New Mexico's Secretary of State last month and lost--reportedly objected three times before the clerk and her superior decided to agree that New Mexico is part of the U.S. The D.C. courts system has since acknowledged and apologized for the error in a statement, while Clarkson posted on Facebook, "You know you are from flyover country when you are applying for a marriage license, give them your New Mexico driver's license, and they come back and say, 'My supervisor says we cannot accept international driver's licenses. Do you have a New Mexico passport?'" Read more here https://apnews.com/f184144884774bec849d44ac5046e58a?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=AP_Oddities
