Avocado Prices Jump 34% Amid Trump's Threats to Close U.S.-Mexico Border

Is the avoca-lypse finally here? Bloomberg reports that on Tuesday, the price of Hass avocados from Mexico jumped an astounding 34 percent amid fears that President Trump may close the U.S.-Mexico border. That's the biggest one-day price increase for avocados since April 13, 2009--and analysts believe prices will keep rising if Trump makes good on his threat. “Avocado prices could easily double or triple if we shut down the border,” says Roland Fumasi, vice president and senior analyst at Rabobank. Mexican avocados make up 75 percent to 80 percent of U.S. consumption, with California only supplying about 16 percent. Americans also buy 77 percent of all the avocados grown in Mexico.
