Dog Owners Are Much Happier Than Cat Owners, Survey Shows

According to new General Social Survey data, dog owners are a whole lot happier than cat owners. Specifically, while 36 percent of dog owners described themselves as "very happy," only 18 percent of cat owners expressed a similar level of contentedness. (Twenty-eight percent of survey respondents who ownedbotha dog and a cat reported being "very happy," while 32 percent of folks with no pets replied that way.) But asThe Washington Postexplains, "correlation doesn't equal causation, and there are probably a number of other differences between dog and cat owners that account for some of the differences." For instance, the GSS data also shows that dog owners are more likely than cat owners to be married and own their homes, two factors known to affect a person's satisfaction level.
