Notre Dame Cathedral Survives Fire, Saved and Preserved’

Notre Dame’s structure is saved, French authorities announced Monday night, close to four hours after a massive blaze broke out at the top of the historic Gothic cathedral.

“We can consider that the structure of Notre Dame has been saved and preserved,” said Paris fire brigade chief Jean-Claude Gallet, according to Agence France-Presse.

The 850-year-old building’s two main towers are also in the clear, Gallet added.

“The fire has lowered in intensity. We can say that the structure is saved, notably the northern belfry,” said Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, according to Le Figaro.

About two-thirds of the roof went up in smoke, as did the iconic spire, authorities said.

Pictures from inside the cathedral obtained by Reuters show fog and giant flames roaring. Another image shows firefighters gathered in a doorway as cinders rain down.

An investigation has been opened into how the blaze, which erupted at around 6:50 p.m. local time, began.
