Supreme Court Rejects Adnan Syed's Appeal in "Serial" Murder Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to consider an appeal for convicted murderer Adnan Syed after his case became famous thanks to the first season of the Serial podcast. CNN reports that Syed's lawyers petitioned the Supreme Court in August to reverse a March ruling by the Maryland Court of Appeals that refused to grant him a new trial. A lower appeals panel previously vacated Syed’s murder conviction and granted him a new trial on the grounds that he had received ineffective legal counsel from lawyer Cristina Gutierrez, who is deceased. Gutierrez reportedly failed to call an alibi witness whose testimony would have made it impossible for Syed to have murdered ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999. The 40-year-old Syed has been serving a life sentence plus 30 years for Hae's murder. Read more here
