Caroll Spinney, who played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch over five decades, died Sunday at 85.
The puppeteer had been suffering from dystonia, a common movement disorder. He was 85.
In a press release, the Sesame Workshop said, "Caroll was an artistic genius whose kind and loving view of the world helped shape and defineSesame Streetfrom its earliest days in 1969 through five decades, and his legacy here at Sesame Workshop and in the cultural firmament will be unending."
Spinney won five Daytime Emmys for his work onSesame Streetand earned a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2006.
