Yoga can help relieve stress, but that’s not all it can do. While it’s not the most intense workout, the practice can help you shed pounds, if that’s your goal. Yoga can raise your heart rate, burn calories, improve sleep, and lower stress - all of which help with weight loss. But there are different types of yoga and some will help you reach your goal better than others.
If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ll want to swap the more relaxing forms of yoga for a more intense, athletic type. Fitness instructorOlivia Youngrecommends Vinyasa. “It’s strenuous,” she explains. “It’s cardio-based. It’s literally moving constantly.”
In this kind of yoga, the movements all run together and within Vinyasa, there are other subsets, like power yoga. For the best results, Young advises practicing yoga four times a week and doing it with extra cardio, like shadow boxing or running. And it’s natural to want to see immediate results, but just like with any workout, slow and steady is the way to go.
