In an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus, the music festival season has been put on hold. Many venues have shut their doors, while most bands have temporarily stopped touring.
But are these measures necessary?Rolling Stoneasked Dr. Daniel Griffin, who's an infectious disease physician specialist at Columbia University, and got the answer.
According to Dr. Griffin, having lots of people packed into a tight space creates a breeding ground for infection, which takes off when concertgoers leave the show.
Just how much? "A percentage of them — we've seeing now about a third of people, 35 percent — at large gatherings like this get infected, and then that just spreads and spreads," reveals Dr. Griffin.
