Splash Mountain at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort will be re-themed, the company said Thursday.
The popular ride had come under fire recently for being modeled after the controversial Disney movieSong of the South, which many have deemed racist. The attraction will now reflect the story ofThe Princess and the Frog, which features Disney's first Black princess.
Despite the recent calls to change the log flume ride, Disney says the makeover has been planned since at least last year.
Carmen Smith, Creative Development and Inclusive Strategies executive with Walt Disney Imagineering, says, "We continually evaluate opportunities to enhance and elevate experiences for all our guests. It is important that our guests be able to see themselves in the experiences we create. Because we consider ourselves constant learners, we go to great lengths to research and engage cultural advisors and other experts to help guide us along the way."
