Brands including Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben's and Eskimo Pie recently announced they would be removing “"racist packaging" from their products, and now folks want Trader Joe’s to do the same.
AChange.org petition, which so far has about 1,4000 signatures, is demanding the brand make some changes to their “ethnic foods,” noting their labels perpetuate “a narrative of exoticism that perpetuates harmful stereotypes.” Examples of such products include Chinese foods that use the brand Trader Ming’s and Mexican ones that are labeled Trader Jose’s.
But it turns out the petition actually wasn’t necessary because they’ve already started the process of making those changes. The company notes that while initially the names “may have been rooted in a lighthearted attempt at inclusiveness, we recognize that it may now have the opposite effect."
In fact, they say they decided to stop using those names several years ago, withKenya Friend-Daniel, Trader Joe's national director of public relations, sharing, “since then, we have been in the process of updating older labels and replacing any variations with the name Trader Joe's, and we will continue do so until we complete this important work."
