There are now about 90 brands of hand sanitizer to avoid, according to the FDA.
The agency announced yesterday multiple companies are still using unsafe alcohols in their products, and are encouraging people to check the manufacturer, product name, and the national drug code before using.
The FDA is constantly updating its list of unsafe sanitizers on its website. They said they are placing certain sanitizers on an import list to slow down their entry into the U.S.
The issue is many of the brands on the list contain methanol. Exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death.
In many cases methanol is not listed on the label, even though it is an ingredient.
