One of the biggest obstacles to working from home can be staying focused. It’s easy to get distracted with a dishwasher that needs to be emptied, kids who need help with homework, or another episode of your latest Netflix obsession. But there are some tricks experts say you can use when you just can’t seem to concentrate.
Try these out next time you find yourself procrastinating when you really should be working:
Exercise as hard as you can for five minutes: Just get out of your chair and do five minutes of burpees or jumping jacks before getting focused again. Getting your blood pumping, even for a short amount of time, actually changes your brain chemistry. It allows your brain to refocus and get back to the task at hand.
Avoid multitasking: Unfortunately, you can’t really fold clothes and check emails at the same time. It makes any task take longer and you work less efficiently at everything you are trying to do. Instead, tackle one project at a time and you’ll actually get done faster.
Plan out your day in advance: This is a great tip for anyone working from home. Make a to-do list and stick to it. Don’t forget to include breaks and lunch.
Try the Pomodoro Technique: This time management technique was created in the late 1980s and involves working in 25-minute intervals with a short break at the end of each interval. Try it out. You’ll be surprised how much you get done and how helpful the breaks are. (She Knows)
