Who else likes to proudly display all the new groceries in the front of the fridge, covering up all the old food in the back? We like to look at the fresh stuff, meanwhile our old container of strawberries and bag of spinach are getting squishy behind the new buys and by the time we find the previous produce purchases, it’s too late and we have to toss them.
Food waste is a common problem in the U.S. and Dr.Denise Bustard, a scientist turned food blogger, has a fridge hack to help keep us from throwing out uneaten produce that’s past its prime. She suggests making a “use me first” bin so fruits and veggies don’t get lost in the back of the refrigerator and go bad before you find it. It helps you get more organized and it’s in plain view, so you know what to reach for first when you go to grab.
Dr. Bustard’s tips for creating a “use me first” bin include:
- Use a clear container since being able to see what’s in there is key.
- Go with a larger size bin, so you have room for things like romaine lettuce and cucumbers.
- Get in the habit of making that bin the first stop for snacks, stir-fries or salads.
It’s so simple, but it can make a big difference with cutting down on food waste.
