The keto diet is still popular and fans love it because they can still lose weight while feasting on bacon. But there are some downsides to eating all those fats and protein while limiting carb intake and newresearchsuggests that keto could be bad for heart health.
Researchers at National Jewish Health reviewed findings from previous studies on the ketogenic diet, as well as intermittent fasting diets, and identified some positives and negatives to following them. Study authors explain that both diets “do seem to help people lose weight in the short-term,” but they also include foods that are “known to increase cardiovascular risk and are unlikely to be as effective at preventing heart disease” as nutritional guidelines recommended by health experts.
On top of that, the researchers say that while keto does help followers shed pounds right off the bat, it “tends to not be sustainable” after a year. As for the heart health issues from keto, those can be blamed on the amount of fat people eat on it, especially saturated fat - which is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Study authors warn that some evidence shows staying on a keto diet for an extended period of time may lead to stiffening of the arteries and that several studies found keto dieters may have “a greater risk of death.”
