R. Kelly Accuser Testifies He Forced All 'Girlfriends' To Write Letters
Day six of R Kelly’s sex trafficking trial featured the third day of Zel’s testimony. Going in, we knew that the woman identified as Jane Doe 5 was an aspiring singer who met him when she was 17 and spent five years of her life with him. In addition to him allegedly abusing her, forcing her to get an abortion, and giving her herpes, she claimed that he controlled her and another live-in girlfriend’s interview with “CBS This Morning” host, Gayle King.
- Zel testified that R would make his girlfriends write “collateral” letters denying allegations of abuse in order to protect himself against possible legal actions. She claimed that he’d also make her write letters to her family members where she accused her parents of selling her out to the singer. In one, she was forced to write that while she wanted to have sex with him, he only wanted to be friends.
- She was cross-examined by the defense. They presented the letters and other evidence in an attempt to discredit her testimony and throw blame on her parents for allegedly trying to take advantage of his fame. She insisted that the abuse was real and that the letters were a ploy Kelly allegedly used “to protect him in a trial like this from very serious charges.” One the lawyers gave a point-by-point rundown of her testimony and asked whether the blame fell “on your parents or the defendant.” She responded, “The defendant.”
Kelly is charged with nine counts of racketeering and violations of the Mann Act. If convicted on all counts, he faces 10 years to life in prison.
