TripAdvisor Discovers One Million Reviews To Site Were Fake


These days a lot of us rely on online reviews before booking our vacations to tell us the best places to stay, and the best things to do when we get there. But how do we know those reviews are reliable? Well, judging by a new TripAdvisor report, there’s a good chance they may not be.

  • The site just revealed the results of their 2021 Review Transparency Report.
  • TripAdvisor notes that in 2020 there were over 26 million reviews submitted to the site.
  • The average rating submitted was 4.3 out of 5.0, up from 4.22 in 2018.
  • They say they rejected or removed over two million reviews that did not comply with community standards.
  • Only 1% of reviews were flagged by travelers or businesses for potentially violating the site’s guidelines, with 43% of them removed after being assessed by the sit.
  • 3.6% of all reviews, or a total of close to one million, were determined to be fake.
  • 67.1% of all fake reviews were stopped before ever making it to the site.
  • In totally, 34,605 properties were penalized by TripAdvisor for fraudulent activity, with 20,299 members banned from the site for violating community standards.
