What You Missed At The 93rd Annual Oscars

Sure, the Oscars are about the fancy awards, but there are also moments when we get to see how ‘real’ people are. One example?Tyler Perry’stireless humanitarian efforts were honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, presented byViola Davis.

She honored the filmmaker with an intro noting that he knows what it’s like to be “hungry, without a home, unsafe and uncertain,” and Perry took the stage to honor his motherWillie Maxine Perry, who taught him to “refuse hate and blanket judgment.”

But as dry a night as the Oscars ever ends up being...there were some fun moments, too.Such as:

  • Steven Yeunremembered the time his momprobablydidn’t know what they were in for when she took him to see “Terminator 2” as a kid… and they “saw some stuff.”
  • “Minari” starYuh-Jung Youngushed aboutBrad Pitt, whose production company Plan B produced the movie. She said she was “luckier” than her fellow nominees because she got to meet the actor – which was her “reward because mommy worked so hard.”
  • Before the show,Halle Berryand her boyfriendVan Huntmade their red carpet debut. So didPaulina Porizkova...andAaron Sorkin.
  • Daniel Kaluuyagave his parents a hilarious shoutout during his acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor in “Judas and the Black Messiah.” “We’re breathing, we’re walking, it’s incredible. It’s incredible! My mom met my dad, they had sex! It’s amazing!” he said on stage. “Do you know what I’m saying? I’m here! I’m so happy to be alive so I’m gonna celebrate that tonight.”His mom didn't seem to grasp what he said...but his sister did!
  • Glenn Closegave the performance of the night. During a trivia game about film songs, she impressed just about everyone with her knowledge of “Da Butt” fromSpike Lee’s“School Daze” –and she even gave a must-see demonstration of the dance. (Check out a clip of that below and to the right)

Possibly the best part? This year, the Oscars ended just 15 minutes late…not bad, not bad at all.
