The Most Overrated Tourist Destinations In The U.S.

If you’re planning a road trip with the family, make sure you choose well. “Study Finds” pulled together a list of what travel publications consider the most overrated vacation spots in the Nation. Some of them may surprise you. Here they are:

  1. Mount Rushmore. “Thrillist” says that only visiting this South Dakota landmark is boring, making it part of a trip including Badlands National Park, the Custer Wildlife Loop, or Sylvan Lake makes it worthwhile.
  2. Las Vegas. The city definitely has plenty to do for adults, but may be overwhelming. When it comes to families, though, “Finance Buzz” suggests that it be a hard pass.
  3. Plymouth Rock. The Massachusetts historic spot is literally a rock in sand. “The Getaway” says this is an underwhelming place to visit, but it may be better as part of an historical landmark trip.
  4. Times Square. This hot spot in New York City has been ranked overrated by many and underrated by some. “Tourism Review” points out that the first glimpse of the busiest intersection of the Big Apple is cool at first then it isn’t. Part of the problem is the large crowds and the overpriced restaurants and shops.
  5. Lombard Street in San Francisco. The street is world famous for its eight hairpin turns and being in so many TV shows and movies. The “Thrillist” points out that the famous road sees up to 350 cars per minute, which means gridlock. And who wants that on vacation? If you just want pictures, go early in the day.
