Your PJs May Be Ruining Your Sex Life

Fuzzy onesies and flannel jammies may be soft and cozy, but according to experts, they might be quietly killing the romance in your relationship. According to relationship coach Channa Bromley, practical pajamas like flannel sets, onesies, or oversized nightshirts can dampen intimacy. She explains that “comfort kills urgency,” and when partners choose comfort over attraction, that mindset can seep into other parts of their relationship.

Science backs up the idea that ditching the PJs and sleeping in your birthday suit could improve both romance and overall satisfaction and might have some other positive benefits:

  • survey from Cotton USA finds that 57% of people who sleep naked reported being happier in their relationships compared to just 48% of pajama wearers.
  • A 2024 study from Avocado Green Mattress revealed that 62% of nude sleepers have more satisfying sex lives.
  • Sleeping naked may also boost metabolism according to OB/GYN Dr. Kecia Gaither, who says that going to bed without clothes helps regulate sleep hormones like melatonin, possibly helping with weight loss.

If you just can’t kick your PJ habit but want to keep the spark alive, experts suggest being intentional with bedtime attire. Bromley says attraction “thrives on friction” and recommends choosing sleepwear that maintains some allure. Sexologist Candice Nicole Hargons suggests that couples pick out “sexy” options for each other from their existing wardrobe to see if it makes a difference in their connection.
