*LIST* How To Be The Best House On The Block For Trick-or-Treaters

Every Halloween, some people go out for the night, or turn off their lights and pretend to, so they don’t have to pass out candy to costumed kiddos. Fortunately for trick-or-treaters, lots of other people not only welcome them, they’re eager to be the best house on the block. And Kroger is sharing tips for “witch” way to earn that honor this year.

Consider this a ghostly guide to being the best house for trick-or-treaters:

  • Give “good” candy - Handing out kids’ favorites is the best way to win them over, so stock up on Reese’s, Snickers, KitKats, M&M’s and Twix. And if you really want to impress them, splurge on full-size candy bars!
  • Go for the trendy treats - Beyond the chocolate, kids love chewy and sour candy, like Nerds Spooky Gummy Clusters, Sour Patch Kids Monster Heads, Skittles Shriekers, Twizzlers Ghosts and Peelerz Gummy Mummy candy.
  • Offer non-candy alternatives - Whether it’s for health reasons, allergies, or purely a choice, not all kids want candy. Having savory snacks, like bags of chips or pretzels, is a good option, and so are fruit snacks and granola bars. Non-food treats, like glow sticks and stickers, are always a hit, too.
  • Go for funny, not scary - Some kids love a good fright, but you don’t want to give little ones nightmares, so “Parents” magazine recommends keeping your decorations silly, not scary, or going with a well-known theme, like “Beetlejuice” or “The Addams Family” that kids already know is fake.
  • Think of the grown-ups - Trick-or-treaters are usually accompanied by an adult, one who’s probably tired and ready for a refreshment. Make their night by setting up a refreshment station with water, coffee or hot cocoa, so they can hydrate and keep supervising the marathon of door-knocking.
  • Don’t ask “What are you?” - Costumes are one of the best parts of Halloween, and some kids spend a lot of time planning and creating their look. The last thing they want to hear over and over is someone asking what they’re dressed up as, so if you don’t know, just compliment the costume or ask how they came up with such a cool idea.
