Some children are becoming literal shut-ins. A new poll finds nearly one in 10 preschoolers and toddlers rarely play outside. Researchers say playing outside can improve children's mental and physical health. The University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital poll shows nearly half of parents hold their child's hand or sit right next to them when their child is trying a new physical challenge. Poll co-director Sarah Clark says parents who allow a little more independence often see their child's confidence flourish. The poll co-director notes "Risky play isn't about recklessness but about appropriate challenges that allow young children to explore what they're capable of. Parents who allow a little more independence often see their child's confidence flourish."
