Survey: The Most Bizarre Things Americans Keep In Their Cars

Does your car look like you could almost live in it because of all the stuff you keep in there? It turns out, a lot of car owners are basically using their vehicles as mobile storage units, according to new research that reveals some of the surprising things taking up space in there.

A new survey of 2-thousand adults across the country finds that less than half (46%) claim their cars are tidy, but a third are downright embarrassed at the state of their vehicle.

  • That may be because 23% have old food wrappers littering their car’s interior and 21% admit dropped food can be found on the floor of theirs.
  • More than a third (36%) have old bottles, cans and takeout cups taking up space in their ride.
  • And a third of car owners keep clothes inside theirs, somewhere between a jacket and two weeks worth of laundry.
  • But there seem to be some generational differences in how clean Americans keep their cars and Gen Z seems to be the tidiest. The youngest age group polled feels most confident their vehicle is kept in a “very tidy” state (32%).
  • Baby boomers, on the other hand, are the group most likely to admit their cars are messy (21%).
  • Half of all respondents feel the current state of their car’s interior in an accurate reflection of their personality.
  • Believe it or not, half of car owners feel they know their car so well they could pick it out from a lineup just by the smell alone.
  • The survey reveals some of the most bizarre items currently inside respondents’ cars include uncashed lottery tickets, a dog stroller, cassette tapes, false teeth, an assortment of jams and jellies, a Sammy Sosa bobblehead, a camping shower, old Halloween decorations and someone’s husband’s fake leg.
