Romance scams are ramping up just in time for Valentine's Day. FBI field offices are warning the public of a type of romance scam known as confidence fraud, which has swept up many victims ahead of the holiday. The San Diego Field Office says it's an online method where fraudsters form friendly or romantic relationships to exploit trusting victims. Officials say scammers usually try to convince victims they have feelings for them and then try to exploit money, personal or financial information or items of value. The use of AI is making it easier for thieves to be successful. The rule of thumb to avoid scams is: if it’s too good to be true, it most likely isn’t true.
