We know that dating at any age can be an absolute nightmare. But if you go by what we see on TV or in movies, you’d think finding love after 40 is especially difficult. In reality, that narrative doesn’t quite hold up.
New data from eharmony tells a different story. In their “Redefining Love After 40” report, they spoke to over 3,000 single adults across the U.S.- and the results might surprise you. Most singles over 40 aren’t discouraged at all. In fact, they’re feeling pretty optimistic about dating and genuinely open to finding love.
According to the data:
- 56% said that turning 40 finally gave them more time to focus on themselves
- 21% see turning 40 as a chance to completely reinvent themselves
- 60% of daters between 40 and 49 say they're emotionally ready for a new long-term relationship
- 48% of 40-somethings say they feel more confident expressing exactly what they want in bed now than ever before
- 61% of 50-somethings said the same
So, where are 40-somethings finding love?
- 19% are on dating apps
- 31% of singles who refuse to use apps have been single for over a decade
The report makes it clear - this stage of life isn’t about settling, it’s about clarity. By this point, you’ve likely built a career, created a life you’re proud of, and maybe even raised a family. With that comes a deeper understanding of who you are and what truly matters to you. Because of that, what you’re looking for in a partner tends to shift. It’s less about potential and more about compatibility. You know yourself better, you’re clearer on your values, and that makes it easier to recognize the kind of connection that actually works for you.
