The HGTV series “Renovation Aloha” is facing legal action after an episode showed the discovery of human remains at a property in Hilo. Remains are considered very sacred in Native Hawaiian culture and it is illegal to broadcast footage of them. During the episode that aired, host Kamohai Kalama reacted on camera in shock, saying, “There’s bones back here,” as filming continued. In a court complaint, Deputy Attorney General Miranda Steed stated, “The broadcast of footage depicting iwi kūpuna on national television causes profound and irreparable harm to the Native Hawaiian community.” Responding to the backlash, HGTV said, “We take the concerns raised by the Native Hawaiian community very seriously,” adding, “We apologize to anyone who found any part of the episode offensive, as that was not HGTV’s intention.” The scene has since been removed from “all future network airings and platforms” and the newly re-edited episode clarifies that local authorities were contacted when the remains were found and the hosts did not develop the site and had it blessed by a community elder out of respect.
