More People Are Working From Home Over High Gas Prices

Filling up the tank costs more these days and new research suggests it’s changing the way people drive. It turns out, more Americans are now working from home because of rising gas prices.

According to a new survey of 1,073 car owners nationwide from auto parts retailer AmericanMuscle, 12% say they’ve started working remotely to avoid commuting as a direct result of high gas prices. And that jumps to 16% for Gen Z workers.

  • Gas prices have led 6% to look for a job that’s closer to home, and 15% are now planning to switch to an electric or hybrid vehicle.
  • Nearly all respondents - 96% - admit that gas prices are a financial burden for them this year.
  • More than two-thirds (69%) have cut back on their driving to save on gas, and nearly 50% are spending less on travel, dining out and other non-essentials because of higher fuel costs.
  • Elevated gas prices are the reason 37% have delayed or cancelled a road trip and 22% have postponed car maintenance like oil changes and new tires as a result of paying more at the pump.
  • And 11% say they’re planning to sell their gas-powered car within the next five years.
  • To find cheaper gas, 6% drive to a different city, traveling an average of 26 miles round-trip.

These states have the highest gas prices this week:

  • California - average gas price on April 20th: $5.84
  • Hawaii - average gas price on April 20th: $5.67
  • Washington - average gas price on April 20th: $5.39
