If you’re trying to eat healthier, you may sail through the morning and early afternoon with ease, but what about when the mid-afternoon slump strikes? If you find yourself struggling to find the willpower to say no then, you’re not alone. According to new research, cravings hit hardest at 3:42 p.m., making it the most dangerous time of day for diets.
The poll of 5-thousand adults across the country, split evenly by state, digs into what cravings look like nationwide and finds that the average person gets two a day. But about a quarter (24%) get cravings more often.
- No matter what time it is, more than half (57%) say they can’t hold out on their cravings for more than an hour, and 21% admit they give in after 15 minutes or less.
- When their cravings strike, people most commonly want comfort food (33%), fried foods (22%) and salty foods (22%).
- The most-craved foods include pizza (30%), burgers (22%), French fries (19%), tacos (18%) and fried chicken (15%).
- No matter what their hankering is for, two-thirds of Americans would rather satisfy it at home than turn to takeout.
- Some cravings also linger, as 35% of respondents say their cravings from one week make it onto their grocery list the next week.
- People end up cooking a meal based on a craving over half the time (56%), and 49% have spent more than an hour cooking a complicated recipe just to satisfy a specific craving.
- But not everyone is confident in their culinary skills, including a third of those surveyed who admit that more of the meals they see online just aren’t realistic for them to cook.
- Still, when they do cook something inspired by recipes they see online, the average person estimates coming about 60% close to their vision.⠀
