Survey: 40% Of Drivers Say Their Car Is Their “Happy Place”

For some of us, driving means long commutes and being stuck in traffic, so we don’t love being behind the wheel, but a lot of people actually love it. According to a new survey, four in 10 drivers consider their car to be their “happy place,” as it gives them a feeling of freedom.

The poll of 2-thousand adult drivers finds that 42% even see driving as relaxing and more than half (53%) enjoy the sense of independence that comes with it.

  • While some people can’t wait to get out of the car, 30% admit to taking the long way home just so they can spend extra time behind the wheel.
  • A third (34%) say driving is their favorite part of the day because it gives them a chance to relax and recharge.
  • Some things make a drive much more enjoyable, including sunny weather (41%), dry conditions (41%), peace and quiet (39%) and a good playlist (31%).
  • More than half (52%) say driving in the morning is their favorite time of day, and a quarter of them prefer early morning drives.
  • Location makes a difference, too, as 31% prefer coastal roads, while 17% prefer driving in the countryside.
  • Driving alone is better than driving with others in the car, according to 45%.
  • Overall, 40% of drivers say they feel happy behind the wheel and 35% say driving can boost their mood.
  • But some things always make motorists smile, especially when there’s no traffic on the road (59%) and when their favorite song comes on (52%).
  • Drivers also prefer sunny days, drives with no construction or potholes, and they love it when someone lets them in on the road.
  • More than half (53%) even admit to staying in the car after arriving at their destination just to have more time to themselves.
