Boy Asks For Food Donations Instead Of Gifts For His Birthday

12-year-old Dominic Mercado from New Jersey is celebrating his birthday by asking for food donations instead of gifts to to help during the coronavirus pandemic. He was recognized for his kind efforts by Governor Phil Murphy during a press conference Saturday.

He asked for pasta and other non-perishable foods that he plans to donate to those in need due to food insecurity. The first day nearly 100 families brought him food donations thanks to his birthday wish.

"Dominic, we wish you the very happiest of birthdays and we thank you," Gov. Phil Murphy said.

Mercado was initially inspired by his father, a firefighter, who is on the from line everyday. The food he receives will be donated to the Vineland Soup Kitchen who have almost doubled in their necessity of food since the pandemic hit.
