Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, was delivering the commencement speech at his alma mater when he shared more than just knowledge and experience with the graduating class.
“I would like to give you a piece of my dream to help inspire yours and let you know that it is possible,” Gebbia said during his speech Wednesday night.
Each of the 890 seniors at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, which is about 30 miles outside Atlanta, will get 22 shares of Airbnb stock, Gebbia announced. That’s about $2,400 worth of stock per graduate, based on Wednesday’s closing price of $110.40 a share. Altogether it’s a gift worth nearly $2.2 million.
“I definitely don’t remember the advice I was given at my graduation. And I don’t expect you to, either,” Gebbia said. “So I thought of a way to help you remember.”
