Albuquerque Among The Lowest Markup For DoorDash Deliveries In The U.S.

We’ve all heard ads for chain restaurants that say “prices may vary,” but it turns out, when you order through a delivery app, the cost of the service can differ, too, depending on where you live. To find out how the price of food delivery changes across the country when using different apps, the credit building site Self did some research.

They ordered the exact same meal from McDonald’s in the 100 biggest cities in the U.S. through three delivery apps - DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub. They kept the order - a Quarter Pounder regular meal, a regular 10-piece McNugget meal, a regular Coca-Cola, and a side of regular fries - exactly the same every time so they could compare the price increase fairly.

And they found the prices varied significantly depending on location:

  • The highest price for the order was in Seattle, Washington, where the average price came to $55.35.
  • That’s $23.95 more than the cheapest city - Lubbock, Texas - where the same Mickey D’s food was just $28.65.
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia, has the highest price difference (65%) between buying directly from McDonald’s or using food delivery apps ($13.75 versus $39.12)
  • Uber Eats is the most expensive app to order food on average across all 100 cities, costing 51.3% more than buying directly from McDonald’s. But the other apps were close behind, DoorDash at 48.8% and Grubhub at 48.7%.
  • Lincoln, Nebraska, has the lowest markup (19%) between restaurant and delivery app prices.
  • Cities with a markup of more than 60% include Riverside, California; Sacramento, California; Omaha, Nebraska; Stockton City, California; Corpus Christi, Texas; Oakland, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
  • After Seattle, the most expensive orders were in San Francisco ($50.81), Chula Vista, California ($50.68) New York City ($48.66) and Washington, D.C. ($48.23)
  • In case you're wondering, Albuquerque has the 2nd least markup in the US with that same meal totaling $32.25
