The True Cost of The 12 Days Of Christmas In 2023

It seems like everything is more expensive these days, including the gifts in “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” For the last 40 years, PNC has calculated the prices of the 12 gifts in the classic Christmas carol and it would set you back quite a chunk of change to recreate those presents this year.

According to the PNC Christmas Price Index, buying all those things listed in the song for your “true love” will cost $46,729.86. That’s up 2.7% from 2022, which is a lot less than last year’s 10.5% increase.

Broken down by gift the costs are:

  • A Partridge in a Pear Tree - $319.18
  • Two Turtle Doves - $750
  • Three French Hens - $330
  • Four Calling Birds - $599.96
  • Five Gold Rings - $1,245
  • Six Geese-A-Laying - $780
  • Seven Swans-A-Swimming - $13,125
  • Eight Maids-A-Milking - $58
  • Nine Ladies Dancing - $8,308.12
  • Ten Lords-A-Leaping - $14,539.20
  • Eleven Pipers Piping - $3,207.38
  • Twelve Drummers Drumming - $3,468.02

Sure, nearly $47-thousand sounds like a lot, but if you bought all the items repeated over and over in the song, you’d have to shell out quite a bit more. All the repetitions in the verses add up to 364 gifts that total $201,972.66.
