A List: American's Most Loved Dog Breeds

Americans love dogs, with research showing two-thirds of U.S. households have a dog. More than three-quarters (85%) also consider their pets to be a part of their family. But what are the most loved dog breeds in the U.S.? New research from “Forbes” digs in to find out.

  • They asked 10-thousand dog owners across the country about their favorite breeds and it turns out, a lot of Americans don’t have one.
  • The biggest percentage of respondents report that “no breed in particular” is their favorite (13%).
  • But the breed that ranks at the top is Australian shepherds, followed by German shepherds.
  • Australian shepherds are the favorite dog breed in 10 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New York and Virginia. They’re also the second favorite breed in nine states.
  • Aussies may have won the popular vote, but German shepherds are the favorite in 16 states, more than any other breed.
  • The breed that comes in as the “least favorite” is the Havanese, which was the bottom choice in 33 states.
