Albuquerque Public Schools Has Released It's 2024-2025 Calendar

Albuquerque Public Schools students will get a few more days of summer break next school year under the calendar approved by the APS Board of Education on Wednesday. Students will begin school on Aug. 7, 2024 and wrap up the year on May 30, 2025.

The calendar aligns with feedback the district received from students, staff, families, and the community, and it also adheres to state requirements. More than 13,000 people took part in the calendar survey in December.

The 2024-2025 school year calendar will:

  • Give students one day off for Labor Day instead of the two days students had off this school year.
  • Add Election Day as a day off for students, in keeping with legislation passed last year.
  • Shorten Thanksgiving Break from a full week to three days.
  • Shorten Spring Break to one week from the current week and a half, and it would align the APS Spring Break with UNM’s.
  • Minimize instructional disruption throughout the calendar to improve continuity of teaching and learning for increased student outcomes. Specifically, it has 27 uninterrupted five-day weeks, three more than the current school year.
  • Add two additional parent-teacher conferences during the school year for grades 6-12.
  • Maintain instructional hours at TOPS schools with no additional days.
  • Add two instructional days to the calendar while shortening the instructional day by 15 minutes for elementary, middle, K-8, and high school students. The extra two days would offset some of the lost classroom hours.

The shortened instructional days were necessary to address a problem the district encountered during the current school year when teachers were beginning and ending their work days at the same time students were starting and ending class. That led to issues with before and after school supervision of students. Under the current proposal, all K-12 teachers would have 15 minutes built into their paid hours to cover morning or afternoon duties.

The calendar was developed by a committee of principals, union representatives, district administrators, and parents/community members. The calendar committee presented a proposed calendar to the APS Board of Education on Wednesday evening. Board members voted unanimously to approve an amended version of the calendar.

College and Career High School will operate under a different calendar that aligns with CNM.
