Does it feel like something is missing if your text doesn’t include an emoji? Just in time for World Emoji Day on Wednesday (July 17th), a new survey looks at how Americans feel about emoji and it finds that four in 10 say a text “feels naked” without an emoji.
The poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults ages 21 and older reveals:
- More than half (58%) believe emojis improve how we talk to each other.
- For 41% of respondents, a message needs to include an emoji to be complete.
- That number is much higher for younger respondents, as 70% of Gen Z feel that way, compared to 46% of Gen X.
- But messages shouldn’t only be made up of emoji, with 32% calling that a “conversation killer.”
- When asked if they’d like to create their own emojis, 38% say they would.
- So what would these new emoji look like? Popular responses include a “little witch,” a skull with heart eyes and an upside down emoji with a cowboy hat.
- Overall, 58% of emoji users prefer using happy ones, like smiling or laughing faces, and 15% like sweet emoji, like hearts or kisses.
- Only 5% of respondents say they don’t use emoji in daily conversations.
